Selecting the appropriate sunglass to minimize eye discomfort and maximize visual resolution is a subjective process, dependent upon a personal sense of what ‘helps’.
As a rule of thumb for a successful vision assessment, determining the best filter requires balancing light sensitivity issues with appropriate filter color selection.
For maximized visual acuity, select the highest visible light transmission (VLT) possible. Generally, glare relief is achieved by filtering the short-to-medium wavelengths of the visible spectrum (blue-green-yellow), which scatter within the opacities in the ocular media, and allowing only the longer wavelengths to reach the retina. Commonly known as “Blue-Blockers,” amber and orange filters absorb into the yellow and green ranges respectively.
For glare reduction we have found the following families of colors to be most effective: amber, orange, plum, green and grey.
Contrast enhancement is also a function of reducing the shorter wavelengths, and we have found the following families of colors to be most effective: orange, yellow and amber, all of which have the effect of highlighting visual distinction.
Select the highest possible VLT for enhancing contrast. All UVShield filters block the UV range (UVA, B and C) to 400nm — NoIR filters block 100% UV as well as IR.
